Varstiy Boys Soccer Team Finishes Season in Top 10 of Two National Polls

The Varsity Boys Soccer Team finished the 2010 season with a 27-2 record and captured their 3rd straight SC AAAA State Championship.

The Trojans finished the season ranked #9 in the ESPN Rise national Poll. Click the link below to see the entire poll.

NSCAA has the Trojans ranked #7 in their end of the season national poll. This is the 3rd year in a row that Northwestern has finished the season ranked in the NSCAA top 10. In 2009 the Trojans were ranked #1 and in 2008 they were ranked #6. They also finished the 2006 season ranked #6. See the link below to see the entire poll.

Trojans Dominate HSSR State Soccer Honors

The awards and honors keep rolling in for the 2010 Varsity Boys Soccer Team. In the latest installment, 5 Trojans have been recognized by the High School Sports Report with accolades.

Ricky Garbanzo was named Mr. Soccer in South Carolina. Garbanzo, a junior, was 2nd in the state in scoring with 93 points. His 40 goals led the state this year. He replaces former Trojan, Enzo Martinez, who won the award in 08 and 09.

Dennis Moore was named AAAA Player of the Year. Dennis scored 24 goals this year including the 4th goal for the Trojans in the state championship game vs Irmo. Dennis will be continuing his soccer career at Wofford next year. Dennis will play in the 2010 Clash of the Carolina's this July in Charleston.

Coach Dom Wren was named AAAA Coach of the Year. Dom has won 125 games in his 5 seasons as the head coach at Northwestern. His teams have played in the state finals each year winning 4 and the last 3 in a row.

Ryan Foster was named to the HSSR All-State Team. Ryan is a four-year player for the Trojans. While playing the first three in the goal, Ryan moved to forward this year and scored14 goals and had 9 assists. His highlight goal this season was the game winner in the Trojan's 4-2 win over Irmo in the State Championship match. Ryan will play in the North/South All-Start game in Spartanburg in the middle June.

Alex Martinez was also named to the HSSR Al--State Team. Martinez, Region 3AAAA Player of the Year, scored 80 points this season, 3rd in state. Alex will join Dennis representing Northwestern in the Clash of the Carolinas.

Five Trojans Headline the All-Region IIIAAAA Varsity Boys Soccer Team

Alex Martinez was named All-Region IIIAAAA MVP. This is his 3rd appearance on the team. Seniors Jeremy Dobbins, Ryan Foster, and Cody Parks were also selected to the team. Junior Kevin Ray rounds out the five players selected to the team.

Trojans Boys Climb to 5th in ESPN Rise National Poll

With a 4-2 victory over the Irmo Yellow Jackets in the SC AAAA State Championship game last Saturday night, the Trojans climbed to 5th place in the latest ESPN Rise National Poll. The Trojan's only loses this season came to #2 Farragut in the Palmetto Cup and to now #10 Irmo in the Finals of the Lake Murray Challenge. The Trojans finished the season with a 27-2 record which sets a new school record for wins in a season. The team has now won 3 straight AAAA State Championships and has won 15 straight games in the playoffs.

Northwestern Tops the ESPN Fab 50 Spring Pre-Season Rankings

The Northwestern Varsity Boys Soccer team has been ranked #1 nationally by the ESPN Fab 50 Spring Poll. They held this spot throughout the 2009 season and won the 2009 National Championship by going 24-0 and defeating Irmo, currently ranked #4, in the SC AAAA state championship game.

The Trojans will face 4 teams currently ranked in the top 50 of the national rankings this year and could possibly face a 5th. The possible match up could come against #4 ranked Irmo on Sunday, 3/7/10, in the finals of the Lake Murray Challenge. Both teams would have to advance through one game on that Friday and two that Saturday to meet in the finals at Dutch Fork Stadium at 2:00 PM. The Trojans will also face 3 other nationally ranked teams in the Palmetto Cup hosted by Brookland Cayce High School. First up for the Trojans will be #41 Pinewood Prep on Wednesday, 4/7, at BCHS. On Thursday, 4/8, NHS will battle #10 Norman North, OK at 4:00 PM. Then on Friday, 4/9, they will face #9 Farragut, TN at 4:00 PM. Finally, the Trojans have two match ups with region foe #22 Fort Mill. These matches are Wednesday, 3/24, at Fort Mill at 7:00 PM and Tuesday, 4/20, at NHS at 7:00 PM.
